Baby Shower Diaper Cake

I've created another diaper cake for a baby shower, and this time it is for a baby boy. The first diaper cake I made was for a baby girl baby shower and I shared photos of how I put the cake together, you can view the details -HERE if you would like to see.

Just before I headed out to the baby shower I made this matching ducky shape card, using the New Arrival Cricut cartridge I welded two ducks together with my gypsy, then cut one green duck for the front layer, then yellow for the bill . I didn't save the file so I don't have the measurement of the card, but I believe it as approximately 4" high. For the eye I just used two sizes of hole punches.

The BABY is from the Alphalicious Cricut cartridge and welded together before cutting.

This was a super quick card and looks great with this diaper cake.

Baby Diaper Cake

I got to go to a baby shower and the mom needed diapers... so what better way to shower her than with a "Baby Diaper Cake".

This is my first diaper cake and I know it won't be my last, it was so much fun to make, I love how it turned out.
First step, roll up diapers... lots of diapers then secure with a rubber band. I rolled 68 diapers for this cake.

The video link I gave below explains exactly how to put all the diapers together.
Top layer uses 8 diapers (one in the center then 7 around it) secure with a rubber band. The middle layer starts the same, with 8 diapers (secure with a rubber band), then add 12 around the 8 (secure with a rubber band). And the bottom layer builds the same as the middle, then adding 19 around the outside, secure with a large rubber band.

I used 4 skewers (two taped together) to keep the cake layers together I taped the ends so they wouldn't poke holes in the diapers. For my cake base I cut (OK, my sweet husband cut) a circle out of cardboard, then I covered it with tinfoil.
Now for the frosting, or rather the decorations for the cake.
I used Walk in my Garden cricut cartridge, this flower is on pg. 82, the leaf was on pg. 109 using the blackout feature.
I used a stylus to curl the flower petals (be gentle, it's paper and the petals can tear right off... as I did a few times).
Then I rubbed the stylus in the center to flatten it.

I layered 3 flowers together. The larger flower sizes are 2 3/4", 2 1/2", 2 1/4" the smaller, 2 1/2", 2 1/4", 2" the leaf was cut at 3/4" and 1/2". Adhere the flowers together, then use strips of paper for a stem, this is just to place in between the diapers and will not show at all. I added a jewel to the center of each flower.
Note: When making a diaper cake you don't want to stick pins or tape on the diapers because this may cause leaks when the mom uses them on baby.

The ribbon I chose was sheer and when I first wrapped it around the diapers, I could see the rubber bands, instead of using another ribbon over my wide ribbon, I chose to tweak it a bit. After cutting my ribbon the size I needed to go around the diaper layer, I cut strips of plain white cardstock the thickness of the ribbon minus 1/4", then just used tape to adhere it to the wrong side of the ribbon. You can see in the photo below where I pieced together two strips of cardstock. I used hot glue to adhere the ribbon around the cake layer just like in the video.
Around each layer are strips of pink and green twill about 3" wide, I just pushed it in between every second or third diaper. Then using the stems on my flowers I pushed them in between the diapers as well. With my extra ribbon I made a bow then glued it to the top layer ribbon band. Two yards of ribbon was used for my cake.
I love the cute pink ducky that sits gently on top of the cake.
